The town of Sasso offers many possibilities for rambler enthusiasts. As a matter of fact there are many mountains and springs belonging to this municipality.

You cannot miss a visit to the woods of Sasso, which is full of towering trees and is located 1000 meters above see level. All the pathways meet to a single point where the tallest tree stands, namely the beech of San Michele.

This is a majestic centuries-old tree which is probably 300/400 years old. It takes its name from the nearby chapel dedicated to the saint. With its large size (the circumference reaches eight meters), the beech is a symbol particularly dear to the town of Sasso that from a distance could see the arrival of springtime from its flowering before than that of all the other trees.

It is a popular place among hiking and trekking lovers as proof of its landscape and natural value.

This locality is a point of arrival of a modern lift leading to the ski slopes. It also offers the opportunity to stay overnight thanks to the presence of a small hotel situated at the foot of the mountain, near the chapel of Madonna del Sasso. During the summer you will find areas well-equipped for camping in a wonderful landscape overlooking the valley.

Sasso Di Castalda belongs to the national park of Val d'Agri Lagronegrese and Lucanian Appennine.

Over the past years the 'Palio of Sasso', the first man size game of snakes and ladders, has taken place in Sasso di Castalda. It consists in 2 days of entertainment (tug of war, suck race, etc.). It is a race between the 4 neighbourhoods of Sasso, namely Castello, Fosso, Piazza and San Rocco facing on a characteristic circuit made of 64 boxes on a hand-painted ceramic floor painted by Enzo Pianoforte and illustrating the rural culture. The boxes are divided into different types with their advantages and penalties. This playground is located in the 'Parco dei giochi tradizionali'.

Sasso di Castalda is located at about 80 km far from Matera, the town which is well famous for its rock-cut settlement that has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1993. Here you'll find luxury hotels, restaurants and shops caved in the sassi of Matera.

Sasso di Castaldo is 1 hour and 16 minutes far from Pietrapertosa, from where you can reach the hamlet of Castelmezzano thorugh the 'flight of the angel', a mile-long metal cable suspended between two peaks.
